At Web Wiz we take steps to reduce our emissions at source and are committed to saving energy and recycling wherever possible to reduce the impact of our services on the environment. The web hosting industry will always have a negative impact on the environment due to the nature of the business but we can try and limit the impact where possible by offsetting any unavoidable emissions.
Energy Efficient Green Servers
To reduce the amount of power consumed by our servers we no-longer buy ‘off-the-shelf’ general purposes servers instead we choose to build each server in-house for the job at hand.
This allows us to select components that are more energy efficient such as low voltage Intel Xeon Server Processors. This is more expensive but the power savings are over 60% compared to the traditional servers we replaced while at the same time delivering improved performance.

By building our own in-house servers it also has the advantage that our engineers know our servers inside out (literally). This allows us to quickly fix any hardware issues using spare parts that we keep in stock rather than waiting on warranty replacements from 3rd party manufactures.
The Web Wiz Dynamic Data Centre
To further reduce power Web Wiz have built a Dynamic Data Centre with Highly Available Servers in Failover Clusters. This has environmental advantages as well as improving the availability of services and reduce outages.
From an environmental perspective our Dynamic Data Centre allows us to reduce the amount of physical servers we require while utilising the hardware more fully. This has allowed us to reduce the amount of servers we use by over 75% compared to a regular Data Centre, thus reducing the amount of power consumed.
The management, uptime and backup of servers is also improved. Using Highly Available Nodes in Failover Clusters, Servers are able to failover to passive nodes in the event of hardware failure or maintenance. Servers can be Live Migrated if they require extra CPU or memory resources without any downtime to services.
Carbon Offsetting
Web Wiz will always require the use of energy during our business operations due to the nature of the technology services we provide. To mitigate the effects we are offsetting all our Data Centre, office and transport carbon emissions making Web Wiz a Carbon Balanced Company with zero net carbon footprint.
Web Wiz have chosen The World Land Trust to offset our carbon emissions. The World Land Trust are a UK Registered Charity who have for over 21 years worked to conserve the Worlds Rainforests and through their Carbon Balanced Projects they are running restoration ecology projects which deliver measurable offsets for CO2 emissions.
