Web Wiz IPv6 Deployment

What Is IPv6?

Each device connected Internet or Internet Services such as websites require an Internet Protocol Address (IP Address) to work. The IP Address is sort of like a telephone number to locate the device or service on the Internet.

The Internet presently uses IPv4, which uses four sets of numbers from 0 to 255 with periods in-between (e.g. 092.053.240.240), this allows for 4.3 billion IP Addresses.

In recent years with the explosion of Internet-enabled devices from Personal Computers to Mobile Devices, the number of available IPv4 Addresses has shrunk, and new IPv4 allocations have now run out in most regions of the world.

A new IP Address system was needed, this is where IPv6 comes in. With IPv6 you have eight sets of four hexadecimal numbers with colons in-between (e.g. 2a00:85c0:0001:0000:0000:0000:0240:0241), this allows approximately 3.4×1038 IP Addresses. This is a massive number of IP Addresses and will enable the Internet to continue to grow.

Web Wiz IPv6 Services

We started testing IPv6 n conjunction with our existing IPv4 network in 2010, and by 2012 our systems were entirely IPv6 enabled using a dual-stack network design where both IPv4 and IPv6 was available for all our services.

Back in 2012 RIPE NCC developed a rating system under which Local Internet Registries (LIRs) such as ourselves can get up to 4 Stars for IPv6 services. RIPE NCC gave our IPv6 services 4-Star IPv6 RIPEness, making Web Wiz at the time one of only a handful of UK ISPs able to provide IPv6 services. Since then many UK ISPs have caught up.

Web Wiz Customers can request IPv6 Address allocation from us to use with both Shared Hosting, Dedicated Servers, and Cloud Servers.

World IPv6 Launch Day

World IPv6 Launch Day

The 6th June 2012 was IPv6 Launch Day when many major Internet Service Providers (ISPs), home networking equipment manufacturers, and web companies around the world came together to permanently enable IPv6 for their products and services. To support IPv6 Launch Day, we enabled IPv6 for all our services on or before the 6th June 2012. .
